There’s a lot more to the farm bill than subsidies to farmers. Most people have no idea that the farm bill plays an important role in rural development. In Thursday’s Newsline, Sabrina Matteson, the American Farm Bureau Federation’s director of rural affairs, explained that rural development may be a small part of the whole bill, but it’s still significant.
“Rural development is really important because it makes our country a more secure nation,” said Matteson. Further, she noted, “We are very productive agriculturally. We can feed ourselves and there aren’t very many countries that can make that claim. Most of the food for our country comes from rural places. But where farmers live has to have a high enough quality of life in those rural communities so that the next generation will be willing to live and work there.”
