Through the Farmers to D.C. program, held Sept. 14-17, Minnesota Farm Bureau (MFBF) members from across the state came together to advocate for agriculture and share firsthand perspectives with federal policymakers.

Representing a wide range of backgrounds including dairy, crop production, ranching, agronomy and agricultural education, nine participants brought unique experiences that reflected the diversity of Minnesota agriculture. 

Throughout the week, MFBF members showcased the power of speaking with one unified voice, even if their farms and ranches look different. They met with members of Minnesota's Congressional delegation and other government leaders to discuss issues affecting farmers, ranchers and rural communities. Conversations covered the challenges and opportunities facing agriculture today including the farm bill, high diesel prices, the impact of recent beef imports, trade including the USMCA and other topics. The group also joined with members from the Illinois and Kansas Farm Bureau to hear from USDA leaders on a range of topics. 

“Programs like Farmers to D.C. help to ensure policymakers hear directly from the people who grow food and care for the land in our state,” said MFBF President Dan Glessing. “When our members’ voices are part of the conversations they have in their offices, legislators get a better understanding of how the policies they work on impact our farms and ranches back home.”

While those meetings were an important part of the experience, participants say the value of the trip extended beyond. Members spent time learning from one another, sharing experiences and building relationships with one other, strengthening their agriculture networks across the state. They also had time to experience the history of D.C. and what makes our Nation’s Capital so special.  

MFBF hosts Farmers to D.C. trips twice a year, typically in March and September. Next year’s dates will be announced in early 2027, along with grant information for interested participants.
