At the Capitol: May 19-23

The Legislature adjourned on Monday without completing the state budget. Prior to adjournment, the budgets bills for agriculture, judiciary and public safety, state government and elections, Legacy, housing, and veterans and military affairs passed. Still outstanding are the budget bills for health, human services, capital investment, taxes, higher education, E-12 education, energy, commerce, transportation, and environment.
However, the work to complete the budget has continued. Working groups have met throughout the week to finish sorting out the differences between the respective House and Senate proposals. At a press conference yesterday, House Speaker Lisa Demuth (R-Cold Spring) and House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman (DFL-Brooklyn Park) gave an update that most of the working groups had wrapped up their bills or were very close. They also indicated their hope that the Governor would call a special session next week to pass the remainder of the bills. If all budget bills are not passed by July 1, Minnesota state government would face a partial shutdown.
The MFBF public policy team and leadership are keeping track of everything that happens at the Capitol. Throughout the session, we will continue to provide updates and insight into our work on behalf of our members.
